KUCHING: On Mother’s Day, people often take time to appreciate and celebrate the mothers in their lives.

However, for single mothers, this day can hold a special meaning as they navigate the challenges of raising children on their own.

Speaking to New Sarawak Tribune, Stephanie Emelia Lingok, 35, a self-employed mother-of-three, is one such individual who has taken on the role of a single mother.

Stephanie shared her journey, the challenges she has faced, and the strategies she has employed to successfully navigate the journey of single motherhood.

Single mothers face unique challenges, from financial instability to societal stereotypes and judgements. However, the strength and resilience of single mothers like Stephanie show that they are capable of overcoming these challenges and providing a loving and stable home for their children.

One of the biggest challenges that single mothers face is financial instability. Raising a child on a single income can be incredibly difficult, and many single mothers struggle to make ends meet.

Stephanie has navigated this challenge by cutting costs on unnecessary expenses, seeking help from family and taking on part-time jobs to supplement her income.

She also emphasises the importance of mental resilience and not giving up easily.

“Having a strong heart and mental resilience is crucial even when facing difficulties,” she said.

Single mothers also face societal stereotypes and judgements, which can be both hurtful and demoralising. Stephanie has dealt with these perceptions by focusing on what’s best for her children and ignoring what others say.

“As long as we try our best for our children, do what we need to do, and if we feel unsure, we can find other ways to tackle problems,” she said.

Building a support system is crucial for single mothers, and Stephanie has found immense help and comfort in her family and friends.

“Sometimes, when I am uncertain about a decision, I turn to those with more experience. We try to find solutions together, and if we can’t, we find other ways,” she added.

Parenting can be overwhelming for anyone, and single mothers may face additional stress. Stephanie takes care of her mental and emotional well-being by trying to stay calm and happy at work, controlling her emotions even when she feels angry or frustrated.

She also prioritises spending quality time with her children, playing with them, and hugging them when she feels overwhelmed.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day this year, let us not forget the strength and resilience of single mothers like Stephanie.

Her journey as a single mother has not been an easy one, but she has shown incredible determination and dedication in raising her three children on her own.
