KUCHING: The sixth edition of the Sarawak Adventure Challenge (SAC) will be held at Beliong in Asajaya district on Oct 23.
It carries the theme ‘The Dragons Challenge’ this year, a reference to the popular temple on the island.
The annual event organised by local company, Draco Action Sports and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts will feature a one-day multi-sport event involving mountain biking, trail running and other local activities over a total distance of 52km.
“Beliong has so much to offer and this race will highlight the diverse communities, the local economy, the trails and the attractions of this fascinating nearby destination,” said Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
“Beliong is not to be underestimated and the sixth edition of SAC will indeed be a challenging race featuring a variety of trails passing through local communities, local attractions, orchards and plantations with the town of Beliong and its now iconic temple as the start and finish point.”
Karim, said since there is no vehicle access to Beliong getting to this year’s event and the starting line requires a river crossing using local passenger ferries.
“The organiser will be providing free ferry coupons for the participants and in order to encourage more participation from outside of Sarawak, shuttle services will be provided between the Roxy Hotel and Beliong,” Karim added.
“Events such as the SAC provide a means to promote the adventure and recreation potential of Sarawak and is an excellent platform for highlighting the spectacular scenery and natural attractions Sarawak has to offer, not only to international tourists, but also to local residents.
“This is evident from the continued and increasing local participation in the event,” Karim said.
Since the first year, the event has grown in popularity and has attracted participants from throughout the region including Brunei, Singapore, West Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.
Last year, even with travel restrictions due to the pandemic, the event still managed to attract more than 300 participants.
