KUCHING: The Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) plays a significant role in developing Sarawak towards digitisation.

Its general manager Dr Zaidi Razak said the regulatory body’s role is not only limited to telecommunications, having developed 154 initiatives that support digitisation in Sarawak, but also other inventions including the development of the Sarawak ID application which now has 881,538 registered users.

“Many services are offered by the state government through the Sarawak ID that unifies government and private sector services.

“In fact, other states in Malaysia want to develop similar applications but at that time we had yet to succeed until now because the application requires a single sign-on,” he said.

Zaidi said this during a courtesy call from the Sarawak State Public Service Commission (SPANS) delegation led by its chairman Datuk Dr Sabariah Putit at the SMA Office yesterday (Feb 8).

Of the 154 initiatives, 64 were fully developed by SMA while the rest were created in collaboration with various government and private agencies in Sarawak.

“We are very proud to receive the London Innovation Award last year through the development of the iSarawakCare application that unites various applications through digitisation.

“The irony is, we managed to change the way one ministry works to another digital platform where applicants can access their application from beginning to end,” he said.

Commenting on other infrastructural developments developed by SMA, Zaidi said another Digital Innovation Hub (DIH) has been established and is currently operating in Kapit.

He hoped that young people would take the opportunity to get involved with digital services provided by SMA.
