SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch chairman cum deputy chairman of Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), Robert Lau Hui Yew, visited Nanga Tutus few days ago in connection with efforts to improve public infrastructure and facilities there.

Besides SUPP members and SRDC Councillors, the visiting team also included newly appointed Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman, Ting Ing Horh and his councilors. Ting was deputy SRDC chairman for ten years.

During the visit, they went to Rumah Engir, Rumah Limbai, Rumah Steven Bana, Rumah Michael Pengapang, Rumah Livina Matthew, Rumah Augustine Meringai, Rumah Ukar, Rumah Ali Jampi, Rumah Muja and Rumah Randi.

While interacting with the residents, Lau told them that the state government emphasised rural development by using state funds where there is none from the federal government.

And he insisted that Sarawak should be governed by its own people from Sarawak-based parties. Therefore, he said, the people should strongly support Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Regarding the chairmanship of SMC, it has been given to a SUPP appointee, Ting Ing Horh, which implies that the position is back with the party.

Lau believes that this would bring continuous development to Sibu town and the surrounding rural areas well into the near future.

On his part, Ting takes the giving of the chairmanship of SMC and SRDC to SUPP as a show of trust that the chief minister has in the party.

He believes that with Lau at the helm of SRDC and he himself leading SMC, the development of Sibu town and rural Sibu would move forward in the right direction.

Speaking about the longhouse visit, he felt it was like being “back with his family” as it allowed him to catch up with some old friends.

In their visit from longhouse to longhouse, the main request was for supplies of treated water. They also asked for street lamps and roads for their villages.
