SIBU: In a fervent celebration of Social Work Day 2024, the Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) played host to a dynamic convergence of insightful seminar and an engaging social work booth exhibition, igniting a collective call to action towards a more harmonious, inclusive, and sustainable future.

The event held at MPI yesterday, welcomed guests and participants to delve into pressing societal issues and explore innovative solutions through dialogue and collaboration.

The opening ceremony, with Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee as the guest of honour and MPI chief executive officer Hii King Kai in attendance, set a tone of inspiration and commitment towards fostering transformative change.

Tiang’s sponsorship of the event underscored the significance of such initiatives in driving positive societal shifts.

Under the theme, “Working Together to Foster a Transformation Change Towards a Harmonious, Inclusive & Sustainable Future,” the seminar delved into contemporary challenges faced by local communities.

Speakers, including renowed figures such as president of the Malaysian Association of Social Workers, Dr Teoh Ai Hua, Dr Dolly Paul Carlo and Dr Ling How Kee, illuminated the evolution of social work towards innovative, community-led approaches.

Attendees were urged to explore actionable solutions to address systematic inequalities and promote inclusivity, mutual understanding, and human rights for sustainable well-being.

The social work booth exhibition, a centrepiece of the event, empowered communities by showcasing non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and governmental initiatives aimed at creating a positive impact.

Participating governmental, non-governmental, and private agencies such as Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference, Social Welfare Department, Enoch Elderly Association and Tzu-Chi, among others, engaged attendees in dialogue and provided resources for informed decision-making.

This interactive platform enabled locals to voice concerns for community well-being and gain valuable insights into ongoing efforts to address societal challenges.

Throughout the event, the privotal role of social workers in driving positive change was underscored, highlighting the MPI’s Diploma in Social Work Course as a pathway to fostering compassionate and skilled professionals dedicated to creating a better society.
