KUCHING: Members of the public are unhappy about the new ceiling prices of chicken and eggs. They fear the new ceiling price, which came into effect today, would affect the prices of many things in the market as well as the prices of food and drinks at eateries.

The new maximum retail price for a standard whole chicken now is RM9.80 per kg while for super chicken, it is RM10.80 in Sarawak.

Grade A eggs cost RM0.47 each while it is RM0.45 each for Grade B eggs and RM0.43 each for Grade C eggs.

I am quite concerned about the new ceiling price because it will push up the prices of many things, especially prices of food and drinks at eateries. It may be a blessing in disguise as we have to be more prudent with our spending.  Some people may engage in panic buying, but I personally will not because it is not feasible in the long run.

It is disheartening to see the prices of goods increasing. I think panic buying is not good. It is best to buy in moderation and be considerate of others.

I see that the new ceiling prices are quite burdensome for those who are earning minimum wages. On top of that, these prices will affect the business of the small and medium-sized enterprises; if they were to increase the prices of their food, people will not buy from them. I think the people will also start panic buying as it will be cheaper to buy in bulk.

These new prices will burden owners of small and medium-sized enterprises; like me. I’m doing a packed food business which includes salted chicken and butter chicken. So this kind of situation will affect us a bit in terms of costing. If we are going to increase the price of our food, some customers will not buy it. Some people will start panic buying which is not good.  If we buy too much, the chickens and eggs will not be as fresh if they are kept too long.

The low -income group is particularly affected by the new ceiling prices as chickens and eggs are the basic necessities in life. I hope that the government can provide continuous subsidies to traders. I also hoped that people will stop panic buying.
