KOTA PADAWAN: The Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development has identified a piece of land in Semenggok to build a training centre to train young people for the farming sector.

Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom hoped that the trainees could transform the sector once they completed their courses.

“I’m sure you understand how things were done before and how we want to do it now, to improve productivity in terms of the quality and standard of our products.

“The only thing that we need now is trainers who have the educational background to able to train the trainees,” he told reporters after officiating at the Jalin Tani Carnival and Agriculture Skills and Training Centre at the Institute of Agriculture yesterday (Nov 7).

Rundi hoped the training centre could produce between 25 and 50 trainees yearly, saying that he wants to see the younger generation, especially recent graduates, to get involved in the agriculture sector to help advance the food supply chain.

“Thus we could market our products not just to other states in Malaysia, but also to our neighbouring countries,” he added. “But countries in the European Union (EU) have their own laws to ensure the quality of products. “Therefore, we must follow and comply with all the rules to ensure the expansion of our products,” he said.
