KUCHING: The fire that occurred at the Sterile Room of Lawas Hospital on Thursday is believed to be due to an air-conditioner.

Sarawak Health Department director Dr Jamilah Hashim in a statement yesterday said patients from the nearby wards in the hospital had spotted the incident.

She expressed her gratitude to the hospital security guard and duty hospital staff for their quick action.

“At 6.03pm, the hospital staff immediately informed the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and took immediate evacuation measures for their colleagues and the patients,” she said.

She said Bomba arrived at 6.15pm to confirm that the fire had been extinguished.

“By 7.30pm, Bomba had declared the building block safe and patients were allowed back into their wards,” she said, adding no one was hurt.

Bomba is still investigating the actual cause of the fire.
