KUCHING: State Reform Party (STAR) president Lina Soo welcomes the proposed special voting system for rural communities in the state. “The ERC is doing a very good job in engaging with the voters and stakeholders to improve and enhance the democratic electoral process in Malaysia.

“In view of the remoteness and inaccessibility of many areas in the state, it is indeed noble to consider the special characteristics of our rural voters and how to ensure they participate fully in the process,” she told New Sarawak Tribune, yesterday. On Aug 28, ERC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman announced that the committee was proposing a special system for voters living in Sarawak’s rural areas. The committee would come up with this special voting system so that those who can’t vote the normal way, could do so in other ways.

“We will do research on this matter and we will divide it into certain classes so that we can really make it happen to improve the voting process,” he said. Abdul Rashid also added that the population in Sarawak was bigger therefore “we want people to be well-educated in voting and get the chance to vote in any circumstances”.
