THE Sarawak government has responded to the concept of ESG (environmental, social, and governance) by formulating regulatory requirements, said Wilfred Yap (Kota Sentosa-GPS).

Additionally, it is addressing the demands from investors, both foreign and domestic, to incorporate ESG considerations into its policies.

“Of course, the Sarawak government is on the right track but the journey is still long.

“Over the years, the government through the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has consistently introduced cutting edge technology and innovative sustainability solutions.

“For example carbon storage in Sarawak’s depleted oil fields as a source of income and proposed joint private sector development with the government of our hydro resources through cascading hydro-power dams which is more environmentally friendly into its development strategy that has and will positively impact the environment, enhance energy efficiency, foster social cohesion and promote the overall well-being of all anak Sarawak,” he said in his debate on the Supply Bill.

The objective under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has always been that no Sarawakian should be left behind, he said.

He also proposed exploring subsidies for homeowners engaged in solar panel programmes to encourage sustainable living and environmentally friendly construction practices.

He reiterated the significance of education as a priority and urged the government to accelerate seeking education autonomy which will grant Sarawak the ability to shape education policies in alignment with its vision and mission.

“Tourism can significantly boost the local economy, and I propose transforming the disused Stabar Quarry near Kota Sentosa into a public park, creating a diversified tourist attraction.

“Addressing flood issues in the Stampin Resettlement Scheme and other areas is commendable and I urge project implementation to be expedited.

“To tackle bureaucratic red tape and improve project implementation, I recommend a joint review of institutional structures involving Sarawak and federal bureaucracy,” he said.
