BINTANGOR: The construction of various basic infrastructures is clear evidence of the Sarawak government’s concern towards rural development.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing said the state government through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarikei showed great concern for infrastructure development in rural areas such as Meradong district.

He gave the example of the new bridge constructed at Rumah Panjang Regina, Sungai Selidap, which had been completed at a cost of RM841,608.80.

While surveying the project yesterday, he said the bridge would be able to ensure the safety of the longhouse residents who had been commuting using boats as their main means of transport.

Ding said there were many other infrastructures such as roads which needed to be developed in the Meradong area, especially around the longhouses as most of them are located near the river banks.

The construction of the bridge, which began on Aug 28 last year, was completed ahead of the original expected date of April 7 this year – giving relief to the longhouse residents.
