KUCHING: The state government will take over the waterfront project from Kampung Sungai Bedil to Kampung Tanjung which has been withdrawn by the federal government due to the lack of funding.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the planning of the waterfront project was once under the federal government.
“But it withdrew from the project so we will do it, using our own state funds with a special allocation,” he said during the launching of Samariang Fiesta 2019 at Kampung Lintang here yesterday.
He added that the project’s tender would be out this year.
“The construction will also start this year. We will construct a waterfront without affecting the villagers’ houses as an outward extension with more than 10 feet of embankment into the river,” he said.
He said the waterfront project would consist of a pathway for recreational activities, jogging and a beautiful landscape.
“This is one of our ways to upgrade the villages in terms of facilities and their appearance” he said.
Johari revealed that with the availability of state funds, the state government would also continue the bridge projects cancelled by the federal government.
“For example, for the Batang Lupar Bridge and Rambungan Bridge projects, the state government will continue and take over the project for the people.
“It is now in the tendering process under the Public Works Department (JKR),” he said.
Also present were Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Assistant Minister Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and DBKU mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai.
