KUCHING: More companies from China are welcome to explore investment and trade opportunities in Sarawak, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

Awang Tengah, who is also Minister for International Trade and Investment (MINTRED), said China is a major trading partner with Sarawak, with total trade between Sarawak and China valued at RM27.045 billion in 2021.

“Exports were valued at RM18.6 billion, mainly contributed by liquefied natural gas. Imports were valued at RM8.4 billion, mainly in chemicals, mineral fuel, lubricants and manufactured articles,” he said in a statement.

He said this following a courtesy call by Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, His Excellency Xing Weiping, at his office today.

Awang Tengah also said that Sarawak (Malaysia) and the People’s Republic of China had maintained good relationships all these while after establishing diplomatic relations in 1974, be it from government, business to social exchanges.

During the courtesy call, they also discussed various topics of common interests and exchanged ideas and views on a variety of subjects, especially on trade and investment where Sarawak and China can collaborate such as in infrastructure development, digitalisation, high-tech, oil and gas, petrochemical, commercial agriculture and others.
