State registers 1,403 new cases, two deaths

KUCHING: Sarawak on Wednesday (Aug 18) recorded 1,403 new positive Covid-19 cases compared to 835 new cases on Tuesday, and two deaths.

With that, the state’s case tally is now 90,810 while its death toll is 491.

Among the districts, Kuching accounted for the highest number of new cases at 557, followed by Serian (247), Samarahan (228), Bau (99), Tebedu (49), Sibu (34), Pusa (33), Bintulu (25), Lundu (22), Sri Aman (22), Simunjan (20), Selangau (16), Tatau (11), Mukah (8), Subis (6), Betong (5), Miri (4), Sebauh (4), Beluru (4), Asajaya (3), Kabong (2), Kapit (2) and Lubok Antu (2).

On the new cases, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said 884 were individuals who had contacts with positive cases, 113 were linked to existing active clusters, 130 were from symptomatic individual screenings at health facilities while 271 were from other screenings at health facilities.

“Five of the new cases reported were individuals who had just returned or entered from other states in Malaysia (Import B), namely, two cases from Sabah and one case each from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Perak,” it said in a statement today.

According to the clinical categories, 1,159 cases or 82.61 percent were in Category 1 (no symptoms), 240 cases or 17.11 percent were in Category 2 (mild symptoms), two cases or 0.14 percent were in Category 4 (lung infection and requires oxygen), and two cases or 0.14 percent were in Category 5 (lung infection and requires ventilator).

On the new deaths, the committee said the 490th death was that of a man aged 71 years from the Sibu district who passed away at the Sibu Hospital.

“The case was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on July 8. He had high blood pressure, diabetes, gout, and stroke,” it said.

The 491st death was that of an 88-year-old woman from the Kuching district who passed away at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

“The case was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on Aug 7. She had high blood pressure,” added the committee.

The SDMC also said 1,063 cases had been discharged from hospitals and Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centres (PKRCs) throughout the state.

Of these, 461 cases were discharged from the SGH and the PKRC under it, 179 from Miri Hospital and its PKRC; 150 from the Serian PKRC; 79 from the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) PKRC; 53 from the Mukah PKRC; 53 from Sri Aman Hospital and its PKRC; 33 from Sibu Hospital and its PKRC; 31 from Bintulu Hospital and its PKRC; eight from the Betong PKRC; four from Sarikei Hospital and its PKRC and two from Kapit Hospital and its PKRC.

“This brings the number of cases which had recovered and were discharged to 80,198, or 88.31 percent of the total number of cases in Sarawak,” said the SDMC.

It added there were still 9,936 active cases remaining in the state.
