LUBOK ANTU: Two large trees fell in two separate locations near here due to strong winds that occurred late yesterday afternoon.

Lubok Antu District Civil Defence (APM) officer Lieutenant Desem Samuel said the first incident occurred in Kampung Sebungko involving an Engkabang tree the size of a blue water tank with an estimated height of 45 feet.

According to him, the Lubok Antu District Operations Control Centre (KPOD) received an emergency call at about 7.20 pm.

“Upon arriving at the location, Charlie’s squad found a fallen Engkabang tree near the Kampung Sebungko Bridge and blocking the main road.

“We need two and a half hours to cut the tree using a chain saw in an effort to clear the road to pass through,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Earlier, he explained, another incident of a fallen tree happened in Kampung Stapang which was reported at about 5.56 pm.

“Here, a Mempelam (mango) tree as big as a black garbage can with an estimated height of 30 feet also blocked the main road and crushed a car.

“As told by the residents, the tree fell due to heavy rain and strong winds.

“As such, we remind residents to be more alert during strong winds and heavy rain because there is a fear of falling trees and landslides,” he said.

He said he was grateful when the incident did not cause any casualties.
