KUCHING: Studies on the construction of the proposed Bau Gold Mine Museum and Park are expected to be completed in about two to three months’ time, said Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep.

“The consultant is in the midst of conducting the study. After this, the state government will evaluate whether it is worth it to construct the museum or not — depends on the research findings.

“But the state government is serious in this matter — they have provided an allocation of RM1.5 million for conducting the research,” he said at a symposium on the 200-year history of gold mining in Bau District at Grand Margherita Hotel here today.

He said Bau has advantages including its locality as well as Serikin border market, noting that prior to the upgrading of the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) centre, business activities were already active at the border.

“We want to leverage on this, to upgrade ICQS with regard to safety and we must use the right approach,” he said.

On the gold mining, Jinep said there are many mining leases throughout Bau area.

“There are a lot of companies with the gold mining lease. It is up to them to start wherever they want to in Bau,” he said.

He said companies with mining leases may choose to start mining should the price of gold increase drastically.

“They have to go through the proper process,” he said.
