KUCHING: The number of flood victims evacuated to temporary relief centres (PPS), has increased from 17 victims in the morning to 127 victims, as at 3 pm yesterday.

According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), there are now three relief centres, namely two in Bau and a new one in Kuching.

In Bau, the Dewan Tanjung Batu Tasik Biru PPS and Balai Raya Kampung Opar PPS were the first ones to open at 6.40 am and 7 am respectively.

Currently, there are a total of 20 victims from eight families residing in Kampung Tanjung Batu (11) and Kampung Opar (nine), who are being sheltered at the centres.

Earlier, SDMC said the Dewan Tanjung Batu Tasik Biru PPS had to be closed at 11 am due to lack of facilities.

Because of that, thirteen victims from six families were transferred to a new relief centre at Dewan Perdana, Bau fire station and as at 3 pm, two of them had returned home.

Meanwhile in Kuching, the Nur Hidayah Surau PPS in Kampung Batu Kitang Jaya, was opened at 12.15 pm and it provides shelter to a total of 107 victims from 23 families.

The PPS was opened after Civil Defence Force (APM) Kuching members noticed that the water level was rising from 10 am onwards, just one hour after the first monitoring at 9 am where the water level was reported to be receding.

Continuous downpours since Monday night (Feb 27), have caused several areas around Kuching, Bau and Padawan to be flooded.
