SIBU: SUPP Dudong branch has thrown a challenge at DAP’s Lanang MP Alice Lau – it wants her to carry out at least four major projects here during her current term.

The party’s Dudong chairman Wong Ching Yong wants her to see to the building of a Sibu Heart Centre, Cancer Centre, new SMK Dudong and upgrade to the Sibu Airport Road.

“These four major projects are long-awaited developments for the people of Lanang and Sibu,” he said, claiming that Lau has yet to come up with any proposal.

Wong issued the dare at a press conference during a mobile service by SUPP Dudong at Lung Lung Cafe in Lorong Belatok 8 here Sunday (Feb 4).

“Voters in Lanang told me that they hope Lau will try to complete these four plans within this term and not let the Lanang people down again.”

He called on Lau to state how she will implement these plans and give a time frame on completing these plans.

“For example, SMK Dudong, it was approved in the National Budget 2021 after I personally submitted the proposal to the Sarawak Premier who supported its construction in Sibu Jaya.

“Has Lau bothered to follow up with the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Education?

“As for SK Dudong which is as important as SMK Dudong, what has Lau done to ensure this primary school will also be approved ?”

According to Wong the opposition MP had in September 2022, revealed that she had submitted a proposal to build a heart as well as cancer centre in Sibu to the Minister of Health.

“However, since then there has been no news of any progress from her. Now the Minister of Health is a new one, what is her next step of action?,” Wong asked.

He highlighted that if Sibu has a heart centre, the beneficiaries will not only be people here, but also those in Sarikei, Bintangor, Mukah, Dalat, Kapit and even Bintulu.

“Currently, heart disease patients in these areas can only go to the Samarahan Heart Centre and private medical centres in Kuching to receive better treatment for their ailments.

“Sadly, heart patients from the central region often have to bear huge additional costs, such as air tickets, and there is also the problem of insufficient flights.

“Although land transportation is feasible, it takes a long time and may be inconvenient for patients, especially in emergencies, when every second counts.

“As I have suggested many times, if a full-scale heart centre cannot be built early, at least a satellite heart centre should be set up in Sibu and gradually upgraded to a full-scale heart centre.”

The two current Sibu MPs, namely Lau and Oscar Ling must therefore walk the talk by informing the people their plans on how to bring a heart centre to Sibu, he said.
