KUCHING: The challenges of urbanisation are ongoing, and the need for effective, inclusive and resilient urban planning and policies remains.

Utility and Telecommunication Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi stated this as challenges of urbanisation could be truly addressed through the collective efforts of government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), academic institutions, private sector representatives and concerned citizens.

“Together, we can work towards creating cities that are not only more liveable and sustainable but also more inclusive and equitable.

“That being said, the commitment shown by all of you in finding solutions and building a brighter urban future is amazing.

“Continue to work together, and thus harnessing our collective wisdom and creativity to build a brighter future for our cities and communities,” he said.

He said this in his speech when officiating at the closing ceremony of Malaysia Urban Forum 2023 at Hikmah Exchange here on Wednesday.

Touching on the forum, Dr Abdul Rahman explained that declared actions for Kuching will be the basis for the city to plan its journey in the pursuit of sustainable and resilient urbanisation.

“I encourage all of us to be catalysts for change.

“Let’s lead by example, advocate for sustainable practices and continue to learn and adapt. Let’s remain resilient in the face of adversity and stay committed to the path of sustainability.

With its theme “Catalysing Transformative Actions for Sustainable and Resilient Urbanisation” the forum was held from Nov 4 to 8.

This was in line with the rapid urbanisation rate experienced by Malaysia, which has led to various challenges and risks, including climate change.

With this, MUF2023 aimed to work together with all stakeholders to find solutions and learn from the best practices of any party in an effort to act more effectively and transformatively in order to achieve sustainable and resilient development.

Present during the ceremony were Mayor of Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) Hilmy Othman, Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, president of Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association (SDGA) Dr Jawing Chunggat and other distinguished guests.
