SARATOK: Other social issues must be addressed in tandem with efforts to tackle drug abuse in society.

Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri said the public must understand that the issue of drug addiction cannot be viewed in isolation.

According to him, drug abuse is a problem that is intertwined with various other issues in society.

“It is the last symptom that arises from the breakdown of the family system, individual psychological problems and unhealthy environmental influences.

“Therefore, to address drug abuse, all related issues must be tackled comprehensively and requires the cooperation of all parties,” he said.

He made these observations at a recent Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam) programme themed “Care for You” at the Saratok District Office Hall.

He explained that efforts to curb drug problems cannot be handled by the government alone but requires the support of all parties, including the private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and the community.

He added that if drug abuse is not addressed holistically, it will cause greater harm to the country in the future.

“I would like to thank Pemadam, the Saratok District One-Stop Committee (OSC), chaired by its District Officer Haron Mahidi, and the police for planning various programmes and activities to help the government realise its vision of making Malaysia drug-free.

“We hope that programmes like this will be an effective medium to raise public awareness of the effects and dangers of drug use in life, as well as provide a platform to discuss the issue of drug abuse.”

He reminded parents to provide the strongest defence for their children by imparting knowledge and adequate religious teaching to shape their character.

“In my opinion, the risk of drug abuse can be reduced by strengthening the family institution. Communication and concern among family members can also be a strong prevention factor.

“Therefore, parents are urged to play a role in ensuring their children do not get caught up in drug problems,” he added.

Earlier, a talk was given by district Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division chief, Inspector Amran Zawawi, on the same topic.

He hoped that the public would not hesitate to provide information about drug activities in their respective areas.

Later Mohamad Duri and Haron distributed bean porridge to the local community.
