Talk on postage and revenue stamps at Sarawak Museum today

KUCHING: The Sarawak Museum Department (SMD) will be holding its legacy talk programme (“Program Bicara Warisan”) at its “Ruang Legar” today at 2.30pm.

According to a statement issued by the department, Swinburne University lecturer Dr Ong Liap Teck will be presenting a talk on “Postage and Revenue Stamps with Documents of Sarawak 1869 to 1949” during the programme.

The talk aims to share knowledge about stamps and the delivery of documents in Sarawak during the Brooke Dynasty from 1869 – 1949.

The Japanese Occupation which began on December 26, 1941 ended the Brooke Dynasty in Sarawak.

Ong, who has been a lecturer at the Swinburne University, Sarawak campus since March 2010, is the president of Philatelic Society of Kuching, Sarawak (PSKS). He collects revenue stamps and old Sarawak documents dating back to 1869.

Although the Brooke Dynasty began in 1841, the postal stamps and revenue stamps were only officially used on March 1, 1869.

Ong put up an exhibition on “Stamps and Documents of Sarawak 1846 to 1849” during the World Stamps Championship 2004 in Singapore and won an award for the display.

Members of the public are invited to attend the talk today. Admission is free.
