SIBU: Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang has expressed dismay over the theft of electrical appliances and equipment at the Selangau Multipurpose Hall.

The stolen items include fans, air conditioners, portable air conditioners, ceiling air conditioners, restroom doors, chairs, sockets, wires, fire exits, pump hoses, water pumps, and main water valves.

“I am shocked and saddened to hear the news of the theft at the Selangau Multipurpose Hall, where various electrical appliances and equipment have been stolen,” he told the media today (Jan 11).

The Selangau Multipurpose Hall, managed by the Sarawak Ministry of Youth and Sports, was completed a decade ago but has been unusable for the past two years due to thefts and malfunctions during the Youth Outreach Programme.

Formerly a hub for sports activities, ceremonies, and events, the hall’s dilapidated state has led to the relocation of local activities to SJK Tong Ah.

As the local representative, Gira allocated RM150,000 from the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) to upgrade the hall’s facilities for full functionality.

“I also suggested that the hall be handed over to the Selangau District Office for maintenance. However, there was no response from the ministry to this proposal.

“For me, this is a waste of government resources because the existing facility is not being utilised for the benefit of the people,” he added.

Gira urged the ministry to take appropriate action so that the hall can be used by the residents of Selangau.
