Teacher duped of RM400k in love scam

SIBU: A female teacher here reportedly lost RM391,550 to two online acquaintances in a love scam.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said yesterday that the police received a report from the teacher on Aug 7.

“In early November 2018, the victim got acquainted with a man who identified himself as Roy Lim Cheng, a mechanic of an oil and gas company in Los Angeles on Facebook,” he said.

Then on Dec 18, Roy told her that out of his love for her, he would be sending her a wristwatch, a laptop computer, gold jewellery, and RM70,000 cash.

“Four days later, a man from a courier company called up, telling her that a parcel for her had arrived. But she had to pay RM14,700 as shipping fee,” he added.

She was also asked to make additional payments for customs duty, insurance coverage for the parcel and as a fee to the American Embassy.

She abided and transferred RM298,550 between Dec 24 and 26.

Not long later, the victim met another person, Henry also on Facebook.

“Henry subsequently told her that he would send gifts to her in the form of a wristwatch, a watch, a laptop and RM40,000 cash as proof of his love for her,” he added.

She was also asked to pay RM70,000 which she did so that she could collect the gift.

ACP Stanley said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
