Teen sent to Tunas Bakti School for involvement in wire theft

KUCHING: A 15-year-old boy has been sentenced by the Magistrates’ Court to attend the Tunas Bakti School (rehabilitation institution for adolescents) for three years due to his involvement in stealing several rolls of wire from a shop building in May.

The accused pleaded guilty on Thursday (June 22) to the charges under Section 380 of the Penal Code, and Section 34 of the same code.

The theft took place in a building owned by a company in Batu Kawa here at around 1pm on May 10. He was with two others when the crime took place.

If convicted, the accused could have faced imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine for the first offence, with caning for subsequent offences.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar sentenced Roy Hadison Robin, 30, to a five-day prison term and a fine of RM1,000 or one month’s imprisonment.

Another young offender, aged 19, was ordered to perform one year of community service totalling 80 hours.

The incident occurred when security guards patrolling the building noticed the three individuals tampering with the wires.

They called for assistance from two other colleagues and successfully apprehended the suspects after nearly an hour.

The suspects, and the stolen wires, in various types and sizes, were handed over to the police for further action.

The prosecution was conducted by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang while the accused appeared without legal representation.
