KUCHING: Gratitude was what a young man felt after he survived the blast that rocked CityOne Megamall on Tuesday.

Mohd Shahrizan, 22, said he rushed out seconds before the blast in the Nene Chicken kitchen area.

Shahrizan, who  originally works at Nene Chicken in Genting Highlands,  was temporarily “on loan” for the opening of the new branch at CityOne on Wednesday.

He said he realised there was a leak when he smelled the strong odor of gas.

“The gas leaked about four metres from me. I was hit but fortunately, I did not die. I am grateful that God had extended my life,” he said, adding that  20 percent of his body was burned.

Three victims including the restaurant manager  died in the blast that occurred around 3.30pm.

The victims were Chin Hsien Loong, a 29-year-old Penangite, and two local workers, O Kui Lim, 49, and Tehee Kiom Joong, 24.

They were among the six victims who were in the blast area.
