KUCHING: The cultural and religious significance of dates during Ramadan, particularly as a staple item for iftar, the meal to break the fast, calls for a close look of market dynamics at India Street, known for its traditional sale of dates in abundance.

New Sarawak Tribune delved into the current situation at the India Street market to uncover any changes in price, stock availability, and overall sales trends.

Abdullah Samat, 57, a worker at Syarikat Pakkir Mohamed, said a slight increase in the prices of dates, including those from Egypt.

“We adjust our sales prices according to the supply costs. Unfortunately, this year, we’ve encountered a lower date stock due to a shortage,” he said yesterday.

He highlighted challenges in fulfilling orders, such as receiving only two boxes out of an ordered twenty of Ajwa dates.

Abdullah also said the arrival of new stock, which is pricier and visually distinct from previous offerings.

“Sales at the beginning of Ramadan have been average, but we observed a slight increase during the school holidays preceding Ramadan,” he noted, adding that Mariami dates are the top sellers, available in three varieties priced at RM26, RM44, and RM48.

“This year, we’re grappling with a shortage of date supplies from our suppliers, which hasn’t led to a price increase on our end but has certainly impacted our stock levels,” said Shaik.

He described this year’s sales response as average, with a decent performance in the period leading up to Ramadan.

“Mariami dates, priced at RM38.00 per kilogramme, remain the preferred choice among our customers,” he added.
