Theft of drone, computers lands man in jail

KUCHING: A 53-year-old man was sentenced to four months in jail by the Magistrates’ Court for stealing a drone, seven computers and monitors which belonged to a construction company.

The accused, Chai Kim Poh pleaded guilty to a charge read by an interpreter before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

According to the facts of the case, Chai committed the offence at Jalan Tun Jugah here at about 8 pm on May 27 in a building of the construction company.

The accused is charged in accordance with Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to ten years and a fine and subsequent offences may be subjected to jail and caning or both, upon conviction.

The court ordered the accused to begin serving his jail term effectively today.

Based on the facts of the case, the complainant arrived at work on May 29 at around 8.24 am when he found the gate of the premises was open and items in the office were scattered around.

He also found that items were lost like the computers, monitors and a drone, which prompted the complainant to lodge a police report that led to the arrest of the accused.

Further investigations were made at the scene and the police found the accused’s fingerprints and he later admitted to have committed the crime.

Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad prosecuted the case while the accused was not represented by a legal counsel.
