Theft suspect held for injuring police

KUCHING: A policeman manning the mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) sustained injuries to his face after he was punched by an alleged vehicle theft suspect in Samariang on yesterday (Feb 27).

Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah confirmed that the incident happened around 11.55 pm when the cops were conducting an operation codenamed ‘Op Lejang’ in the area.

He said the 38-year-old male suspect attacked the policeman while he was being examined, which led to the suspect arrest on the spot.

“The patrolman who sustained injury on his face, received an outpatient treatment.

“I will present a letter of appreciation to the personnel who works bravely and diligently to fight crime in Kuching district,” he said.

Ahsmon said the suspect will be investigated under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using criminal force on a public servant in the execution of his duties.

If convicted, the suspect may be sentenced to jail for a term of up to two years or be fined of up to RM10, 000 or both.
