Three drivers busted in anti-drink driving ops

KUCHING: Traffic police arrested three drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol at separate locations in an operation codenamed ‘Ops Mabuk’ recently.

According to the Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, the operations were held in Sarikei on Saturday (Jan 6) and in Sibu on Tuesday (Jan 9).

In Sarikei, the operation conducted along Jalan Repok, led to the arrest of two drivers suspected of drink driving after evidential breath analyser (EBA) tests indicated alcohol content exceeding the permissible limit in their body.

Meanwhile in Sibu, the same operation conducted along Jalan Chennel, led to the arrest of a driver after he tested positive for alcohol content that exceeded the allowable limit.

All three drivers are being investigated under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

If convicted, they may face penalties of up to RM10,000 fines or up to five years’ jail and a potential five-year licence disqualification.

The department reminded road users to obey the laws and regulations of the road, particularly with regard to the issue of driving under the influence.

Strict and uncompromising actions will be taken against those found manoeuvring a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

The department also highlighted its commitment to conduct such operation from time to time to crackdown on drink driving, aiming to uphold the safety of both the drivers themselves and other road users.
