MIRI: Sarawak witnessed a substantial surge in tourist arrivals, totalling 397,785 visitors in February this year, compared to 280,973 in the corresponding month the previous year.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the upswing reflected the increasing appeal of Sarawak as a destination, which showed the effectiveness of marketing strategies and tourism initiatives.

“The increase in visitors not only boosts the local economy but also provides opportunities for cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

“It is evident that the destination is becoming increasingly popular among travelers, and efforts should be made to sustain and further enhance this positive trend,” he said during the ‘Bubur Lambuk Bonus Packets’ programme organised by radio station Mirifm and its strategic partners at Miri Bintang Mall, here yesterday (Mar 26).

He attributed the growth in tourist influx to various factors, including refined marketing strategies, improved infrastructure, and enhanced accessibility.

“The number of tourist arrivals to Sarawak from January to February 2024 has shown a significant increase, with a total of 750,768 visitors being recorded.

“This figure represents a notable rise compared to the 600,037 tourists who visited during the same period last year,” Ting added.

He said the upward trend augurs well for the tourism sector, signifying Sarawak’s rising prominence among travellers.

“We are optimistic that this momentum will persist, further propelling our tourism industry in the forthcoming months,” Ting said.

Sarawak welcomed a total of 3.93 million tourists last year, reflecting its popularity as a tourist hub.

“Interestingly, Brunei tourists made up a significant portion of this number, with more than 1.39 million visitors coming from the neighboring country,” he said.

He stressed the strong tourism ties between Sarawak and Brunei, alongside the appeal of Sarawak’s distinct attractions and cultural offerings.

“The steady increase in tourist numbers is a positive indicator of Sarawak’s growing reputation as a must-visit destination in Southeast Asia.
