KUCHING: Every care centre needs to be registered with the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) so that the management and operation of these centres can be supervised in accordance with the relevant acts and regulations.

Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said that these centres need to be registered so that relevant authorities can conduct proper inspections.

“We have procedures for reporting to the police. For registered centres, we will conduct spot check.

“For those that are not registered, we will take action against them. They may be closed after the police report is finalised,” she said.

She said this when met by reporters during the Hari Raya Aidilfirtri Open House by the Kuching District Office and KMKK at the Arcum Tent, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Hall, here, today.

Nancy was asked to comment on the incident of abusive behavior by staff at the an elderly care centre in Kedah.

Following that, Nancy emphasised that the JKM has already conducted an investigation on the centre.

She clarified that the facility was unregistered because it is a private centre, and a police report has been filed.

“What we will do is close the facility after receiving the report,” she said.

In this regard, Nancy emphasised that those entrusted with carrying out these duties should fulfill their responsibilities diligently.

“Take care of those under your care well. Today is not like before, where one can hide. In this era, we have spies who can monitor our movements.

“We can be seen on social media. People can take videos. Remember, we will grow old one day and will need services that can assist us in our old age. Let’s hope this incident does not happen again,” she said.
