Two mercury spill cases reported in one day

KUCHING: The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) was called into action last Tuesday following a mercury spill at the pharmacy of Debak Health Clinic in Betong around 9.50am.

Six firefighters, led by Senior Fire Officer II Tony Murni, from Betong fire station along with a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) machinery and Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle rushed to the clinic after receiving a call at 9.52am.

Upon arrival, the firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus entered the room and began sprinkling sulphur powder on the surface of the mercury. Tapestry tape was used to clean the remnants of mercury on the floor and then stored in closed containers.

They then washed the floor surface with bleach to ensure no traces of chemicals were left behind.

The operation ended at 10.54am and the pharmacy reopened and operated as usual.

Meanwhile in a similar incident, Sri Aman Fire and Rescue Department was summoned to SK Agama in Sri Aman following a reported spillage of hazardous mercury around 11.50am last Tuesday.

A team of eight personnel, led by Senior Fire Officer II Jilin Itar was dispatched to the school, some four kilometres away, to conduct containment and cleaning-up procedures.

The area where the mercury had spilled was first treated with sulphur powder before being rinsed with bleach. Tapestry tape was also applied to the crease between the floor tiles to ensure no residue remained.

The operation ended at 12.40pm.
