KUCHING: Undi Sarawak was granted to proceed with its application for judicial review on the implementation of lowering the voting age.

The said hearing is set to take place in the same venue on June 30 against the prime minister, government of Malaysia, and the Election Commission.

“We believe that youth between the ages of 18 or 20 are owed their constitutional right to vote.

“The implementation of these bills is made more pertinent for approximately 125,000 to 135,000 Sarawakians in those ages as Sarawak state elections ought to be held once the Sarawak State Assembly eventually dissolves with the eventual lifting of the Emergency Ordinance,” it said in a statement.

It also added that they had taken note of the recent news regarding the King’s advice for the current Sarawak government to continue functioning past the June 6 dissolution date.

“We reiterate that the Undi18 bill must be implemented by July 2021 to ensure these young Sarawakians can exercise their rights as first-time voters during the upcoming state elections.

“Hence, we continue to seek a court order to compel the government to enforce Section 3(a) of the Constitutional (Amendment) Act 2019 on or before July 2021.”
