Unemployed jailed for stealing RM2, phone

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a jobless man to three months in jail for stealing RM2 and a smartphone belonging to a female shop assistant.

Nurfareezan Matjeni, 35, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi to a charge framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, he can face up to ten years in jail and a fine.

Based on the charge sheet, he committed the offence in a grocery store at Jalan Usahajaya here at around 4.30 pm on April 28.

Zubaidah ordered the accused to serve his jail sentence effective yesterday.

According to the facts of the case, Nurfareezan entered the store and took a smartphone and RM2, which the complainant placed on the counter table.

The complainant then lodged a police report which led to the accused’s arrest at the parking lot in front of a bank in Satok around 8.50 pm on April 30.

During inspections, Nurfareezan himself handed over the smartphone to the police.

Background checks found that he also has three prior records related drug abuse, robbery and theft.

Insp Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case while the accused was unrepresented by a counsel.
