KUCHING: Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud today urged the people to maintain unity, saying the unity of Sarawakians is the cornerstone of stability and peace in the state.

Unity is also a solid foundation for the development and socio-economic progress of Sarawak, he said in his message in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak annual festival tomorrow.

“We are grateful that Sarawak remains peaceful and harmonious. The harmony we enjoy today is the result of the tolerance and close ties among our people of various ethnic groups, cultures and religions,” he said.

Abdul Taib said the Gawai Dayak, like the other festivals of Malaysia, emphasises efforts to forge unity and harmony among the people.

This becomes all the more meaningful when the lives of the Sarawak people, especially the Iban, Bidayuh, Kayan, Kenyah, Kelabit and Lun Bawang communities who celebrate the festival, have changed so much for the better and they are now able to seize the many opportunities in the state to raise their living standard and enhance their lifestyle, he said. – Bernama
