KOTA SAMARAHAN: Community leaders and village security and development committees (JKKK) are urged to give their best possible cooperation during anti-rabies operations to be carried out in Samarahan, Asajaya and Sadong Jaya from April 10 to 13.
Asajaya District Officer Rais Ahmat said this at the closing ceremony of rabies awareness programme organised by the state Information Department in collaboration with the state Health Department and Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sarawak at SMK Hajjah Laila Taib here yesterday.
Earlier at the same event, an epidemiology officer from Samarahan Health Department Dr Noor Baizura Jamali also reminded the people to avoid disturbing animals (especially dogs) when they are sleeping, eating, fighting, sick or playing.
According to her, in Samarahan, 1,600 people had been bitten by dogs and over 300 had received anti-rabies vaccines and most of the bite cases were due to pets which had been disturbed.
Meanwhile, Samarahan Veterinary Department officer Parag Kaweh informed that anti-rabies vaccine will be given to dogs in the coming operation.
He also said that individuals found hiding and protecting stray dogs can be fined RM5,000 and jailed for 90 days if found guilty.
