KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has greenlit an increase in the allowances for councillors within the state’s local government (PBT).
In disclosing this, Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said the current allowance for councillors stands at RM300 per month, indicating that the Premier has approved a substantial increase to better meet the needs of these council members.
“At present, the councillors receive an allowance of RM300 per month. The Premier has agreed to increase your allowance; I won’t disclose the exact amount, but it will surpass the current sum,” he said in his speech during the 7th Anniversary celebration of Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) at UCSI Hotel here yesterday evening (Nov 18).
He also said that the ministry will implement the PBT Transformation Plan 2.0 which aims to review several aspects, particularly focusing on the welfare of councillors, chairpersons, mayors, and PBT staff.
Given the responsibility to chair the committee overseeing PBT welfare state-wide, Penguang assured his dedication to enhancing privileges for council members.
“I will not disappoint you and I certainly hope the first paper will be forwarded in the committee meeting probably in December. If it’s approved, you will enjoy your new privileges next year.”
Encouraged by the support from Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and the Premier’s contributions to Kota Samarahan, Penguang urged the council to strive for excellence, ensuring that Kota Samarahan matches the standards set by other councils in Sarawak.
