KUCHING: Efforts to provide broadband telecommunication coverage in the Bengoh Resettlement Scheme (BRS) area in the Puncak Borneo Parliament faced problems when the telecommunication tower there was damaged again and its equipment was stolen.

Puncak Borneo Member of Parliament Willie Mongin today said this was the ninth time the tower had been damaged and he planned to hold a dialogue with the residents at BRS on Thursday to resolve the issue.

“We will bring the police and villagers in BRS to discuss in this dialogue to work together to find a solution to this problem because this also happened in other areas in Puncak Borneo,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after attending the Merdeka @ Komuniti P.198 Puncak Borneo Programme at the Multi-purpose Hall of Kampung Peraya, Padawan, near here.

Mongin, who is also the Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, said, so far, eight telecommunication towers had been completed and functioning while the other 12 towers were still under construction.

“I have also applied for 10 additional telecommunication towers after meeting with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) of Sarawak two months ago. In addition, the Sarawak Multimedia Board (SMA) will build 19 more telecommunication towers, “he said.

Willie said the installation of satellite broadband internet system had also started in the affected areas, namely in Kampung Karu, Borneo Highland Resort, Kampung Bratan and Kampung Simuti.

“This system is operational and is not to take over the telecommunication (tower) system but to complete the internet broadband facilities for remote areas that do not have broadband coverage through the towers,” he said. – Bernama
