Wan Junaidi appointed 10th Aipa Caucus chairman

KUCHING: Former Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has been appointed chairman of the 10th Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (Aipa) Caucus.

According to a statement yesterday, the assembly was established to process and develop common legislative initiatives in order to harmonise the laws of Asean members.

The 10th Aipa is being held in Kuala Lumpur from June 16 till 19 and is expected to deliberate on the rise of terrorism, extremism and radicalisation – a parliamentary perspective; enhancing cooperation on climate action in Asean; and strengthening legal frameworks to protect children from sexual exploitation in travel and tourism.

These issues will be deliberated by three working groups to be chaired by Kepala Batas MP Datuk Seri Reezal Merican, Subang MP Wong Chen and Batu Kawan MP Kasturiraani Patto where, the reports will be tabled to the Aipa plenary meeting today for adoption.

After that, the adopted reports will be presented in the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly meeting in Bangkok sometime this year, before it being presented in a dialogue between the Asean parliament’s speakers with the heads of government of Asean at end of this year.
