SIBU: Newly minted chairman of Sibu Municipal Council, Clarence Ting wants the public to provide him with new ideas on how to improve coffeeshops in the town.

In his Facebook posting, he said though he hoped to see changes in coffee shop standards, old coffeeshops, which were gems of the town, could remain but as long as they maintained basic cleanliness standard.

He pointed out that there were few coffeeshops “that can meet my standard of cleanliness and hygiene”.

Ting added it was human nature for the public to frequent coffeeshops with pleasant surroundings but skip those which were untidy, unhygienic and smelly.

Coffeeshops, he said, needed to be improved as they were places where “we meet friends daily, bring our families and visitors and what returning residents long for”.

On toilets,Ting said they must be dry, well ventilated with clean fan blades, have good flush systems and separate hand basins.

Food stalls, he said, must be well ventilated. The melamine plates they used must not be faded, their wash basins must have grease traps and there should be hot water for sterilising utensils and proper attires for the cooks.

Ting also wanted precooked food to be covered and the stall tops neatly organised.

He added signboards should be clear, the drains and floors clean.
