Watch out for flash floods

KUCHING: People have been advised to take precautions as flash floods caused by rain or thunderstorms are common during this time of the year.

Sarawak Meteorological Department director Haburi Hamdan said however it is not widespread as compared with the northeast monsoon period.

He said as the country is now in the southwest monsoon period, which began on May 19 and will continue until middle of September and the weather condition is that there will still be isolated or scattered showers or thunderstorms.

“There will be isolated or scattered showers or thunderstorms, although for a short period of time, it can be dangerous especially for those residing in the low-lying areas,” he told New Sarawak Tribune today (May 21).

Haburi also advised those particularly fishermen to be well informed about the sea-condition such as strong waves or wind before heading out to the sea.

“While over the interior area, particularly in areas that have waterfalls, rain showers can also post danger to those visiting the area,” he said.

Meanwhile, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s website, it forecasted that there will be isolated thunderstorms over inland areas in Sarawak until next Thursday, May 27.

The department as at 4.50pm today (May 21) has also issued thunderstorms warning for several areas in the country including Sarawak whereby thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are expected to occur until 7pm on May 21.

The expected affected areas in Sarawak include Matu, Dalat, Mukah, Subis, Miri, Marudi, and Limbang.
