KUCHING: The women’s wing of the Kuching Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 Alumni Association emerged as the champion in the Moon Cake Making Contest held at Aeroville Mall here on Sunday afternoon.

The competition was organised by the Federation of the Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions (FCAKSSD).

The second prize went to the women’s wing of Kuching Hockien Association. Third was the women’s wing of Sarawak Chao Ann Association which also won the best arrangement award.

The six consolation prize winners were the women’s wings of the Sarawak Hopoh Association, Kuching-Padawan Foochow Association, Kuching Teochew Association, Kuching Foochow Association, Kuching Hing Ann Association and Sarawak Ku-Cherng Association.

Besides receiving the trophies, the top three winners received cash prizes of RM500, RM400 and RM300 respectively.

The best arrangement award winner received RM200 while the consolation winners received RM100 each.

A total of 15 teams from the women’s wings of the affiliated associations of FCAKSSD took part in the association category while 16 teams took part in the open category.

In the open category, Qamaryna Ngu Abdullah and her friend Angelia Tan emerged as champions; they also won the best arrangement award.

The second placing went to the sisters’ team of Iris Foo and Ivy Foo.

Chang Mei Yen and her daughter Michelle Kho Siew Chin came third while the consolation prize winners awere Bernadine Chung and Serene Kong, Liew Nyuk Boon and Liew Nyuk Siong, Irene Bong and Soong Chai Sia, Jong Hui Meng and Krystal Bong Kui Ping, Jenny Lim and Chang Lee Hung as well as the sister teams of Ching Yin and Ching Fang.

The best arrangement award in the association category was won by Chao Ann Association.

Each team was given an hour to make the ice skin mooncakes. Then the participants had to arrange their mooncakes with decorations that they brought along in line with the theme of the Moon Cake Festival.

The criteria for judging were colour and appearance 30%; taste 20%; creativity 10%; arrangement 30% and cleanliness 10%.

The chairperson of the organising committee Georgina Chong explained that the annual event aimed to preserve the Chinese culture and promote skills of moon cake making as well as foster closer rapport among the members of the various associations.
