KAPIT: A woman who befriended a so-called civil engineer was left RM3,700 poorer after she fell prey to a love scam syndicate recently.

District police chief DSP Freddy Bian in a statement, said the incident happened on Apr 16 after the 31-year-old victim had met a man on social media.

“After that, the victim got in touch with the man who was allegedly a civil engineer working abroad through WhatsApp.

“During their ‘courtship’, the suspect promised the victim that she will receive a parcel of money worth USD50,000, however, she was to pay a sum of money for it.

“The victim did as instructed and made several transactions amounting to RM3,700 into different accounts,” he said.

She only realised that she had been cheated after telling the story to her sibling and a police report was later lodged at Kapit police station on Apr 24.

Freddy pointed out that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
