KUCHING: The 17th World Bidayuh Golf Championship (WBGC) at the Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club in Miri on Sept 9 has attracted 110 golfers from several countries.

Tebedu assemblyman Dr Simon Sinang Bada, who is also the president of Togap Golf Club (TGC), said this is the first time such an international tournament is being organised in Miri.

“Golfers from all over the world will compete to vie for the YB Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn’s Challenge Trophy for the Gross category, and Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) President’s Trophy for the Nett category,” he said in a statement today.

The participants include Bidayuhs who have domiciled elsewhere, who will make the trip back to Sarawak just to play in the tournament.

In line with past editions of the WBGC, a separate category will be available for non-Bidayuh golfers.

Earlier, Dr Simon led a delegation from TGC on a courtesy call on Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn at the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) Tower today.

The meeting was to invite Sagah, who is also the DBNA advisor, to grace the WBGC prize presentation ceremony.

Other dignitaries have also been invited to participate in the tournament and join the lunch for the prize presentation.

During the meeting with Sagah, Dr Simon also briefed him on the programmes organised by Togap to develop young golfing talents from selected rural schools.

The WBGC was first held in 2005 and had attracted more than 100 participants in its recent editions prior to the pandemic.
