Young single mom fined RM2k for drugs

KUCHING: A young single mother was fined RM2,000 or jailed two months in default by the Sessions Court here yesterday for the offence of drug abuse in May last year.

The accused Syahayati, 23, from Kampung Gita pleaded guilty after the charges were read by an interpreter in front of Judge Maris Agan.

The court also ordered the accused to be under supervision for two years after serving the sentence or paying the fine.

According to the charges, she was charged with taking amphetamine and methamphetamine in front of the IPD Kuching Narcotics Crime Investigation Division Office.

She was working as a waiter at the restaurant and was found to have taken the prohibited substance involved at about 11.08pm, May 6, 2021.

Therefore, the accused was charged with the drug offence under Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and can be punished under Section 15(1) if convicted.

In addition, a report from the pathology department biochemistry unit of Sarawak General Hospital confirmed that the accused tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad requested the court to sentence the accused as a lesson for her.
