KUCHING: The Youth and Sports Ministry is fully prepared to assist the Sarawak Government in ensuring the success of the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA), scheduled to be held in the state next year.

Its Minister Hannah Yeoh said those involved in the preparations for the 2024 SUKMA are already engaged in close collaboration.

“The SUKMA committee has already started engaging, and we are going to have one official meeting.

“Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu (Sarawak Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development) has already briefed me that they have some request that they want to bring to the attention of the federal government,” she said.

Yeoh said this to reporters when met at the sidelines after officiating the Kuching Division-level Phase 2 Series 1 of the Sports Basic Skills Training Programme (KLAS) for swimming at the Sarawak Youth and Sports Complex today (Sept 16).

She added that the ministry would explore how they could provide assistance to the Sarawak government.

“We will discuss and we will look at what is the most suitable way for us to help so that we can succeed in this SUKMA together,” she said.

The 2024 SUKMA is scheduled to take place from August 17 to 24 next year and will span eight divisions in the state, including Kuching, Sri Aman, Samarahan, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri.

Previously, Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah had stated that the cost of organising SUKMA was expected to exceed RM100 million.
