BINTULU: A man in his early 30s fell victim to a bogus online job scam, losing approximately RM120,000 of his savings.

Sarawak Police Commissioner, Datuk Mancha Ata said that in early March the private sector employee was browsing Instagram and had received a message from a person identified as Remembey_Lee.

“Subsequently, the unidentified individual extended an offer to the victim, proposing a supplementary income opportunity as a sales agent via the ‘oberlo.ws’ link.

“In order to receive compensation, the victim was required to complete registration on the ‘oberlo.ws’ platform and conduct bulk purchases of the available merchandise,” Mancha said.

He added that profits resulting from sales were remitted to the victim. After the victim completed his registration, he proceeded to make bulk purchases for resale to potential buyers. By mid-March 2024, the victim transferred nine cash transactions to six distinct bank accounts, totaling approximately RM120,000.

“It wasn’t until after all purchases had been finalised that the victim realised he was scammed, having not received the promised profits. Moreover, the victim was pressured to make additional payments, which he refrained from doing due to financial constraints,” he stated.
