Youths need to first understand the law

KUCHING: Young Sarawakians must have a good understanding of the laws of the land so that they can fight for the rights of Sarawak judiciously.

In stating this Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said it is important they do so to have greater awareness on the rights provided for under the federal constitution.

He was speaking to reporters after the “Oxford Style Debate Showcase: This House Regrets the Rise of Sarawak Nationalism” programme at the Raia Hotel and Convention Center here, yesterday.

Yap who was also the patron of the programme the debate was held to raise awareness among young people about the state.

The programme organised by The Sarawak Initiatives (TSI) featured four debaters namely Muhyuddin Ahsan and Catherine Alicia Nathan both from Penang representing the proposition with Terence Aaron Anthony and Ian Dylan Chai of Sarawak as the opposition.

Yap also congratulated TSI for organising the debate that involved young people.

“As a Sarawakian, I also wanted to see and hear what are the views of our young generation towards this state.

“I feel there are many issues raised and they are very important, they need to be researched and listened to by politicians in Sarawak, especially in relation to the idea of restoring the state’s rights,” he stressed.

Meanwhile TSI chairman Sidi Munan was grateful Yap had given his support to the programme.

“We are not a political organisation, what we want is to be a platform for young people to express their views through a debate programme like this,” he said.

The opposition represented by Terence and Ian won the debate.
