110 vehicles checked, six bikes seized in ops

KUCHING: Six motorcycles were seized during an operation conducted by Padawan Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at 18th Mile, Kuching-Serian Road near here.

The operation, which started at 11pm on Friday and ended at 3.30am on Saturday, was aimed at tracking down and detaining motorcyclists involved in illegal racing along the Kuching-Serian Road.

Padawan deputy police chief DSP Merbin Lisa said the operation was led by Padawan head of Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division ASP Muhamad Rizal Alias. The operation involved nine police personnel and six Voluntary Police Reserve (VPR) personnel.

Five of the six motorcycles with their riders which were seized during the operation.

“The illegal racing activity is not only endangering the lives of the motorcyclists but other road users as well. The noises from the motorcycles’ modified exhausts are also causing a public nuisance,” Merbin said.

He said 110 vehicles were inspected during the operation and six motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further examination.

“Among the traffic offences detected were expired vehicle road tax, driving without a driver’s licence, modifications to the vehicle, vehicle registration numbers not according to specifications and riders not wearing crash helmets,” he said.

He said similar operations would be held from time to time especially on weekends to ensure that the illegal racing activity can be eliminated, especially in the Padawan district.

Merbin also advised the public to provide information relating to illegal racing activities to the police so that action could be be taken against those involved.
