KUCHING: Thirty-five participating schools from Kuching, Bau and Serian districts vied for the championship of the peace poster contest organised by Lions International Association.
Twelve-year-old Lee Jun Hong of SJK Chung Hua Batu 10 ended up as the winner while Chang Shi Ying of SJK Batu 10 and Alfred Chung Xuan of Lodge International School were the runners-up.
Consolation prizes were awarded to Wong Jun Shen, David Then Jun and Lai Yi Xuan of SJK Batu 10; Sharon Liew Xin Chi and Austin Tan Jun Hen of SJK Chung Hua No. 2; Anastasia Chek Xin Lun and Charmaine Yong of Lodge Secondary School; Anthea Liew Zi Qi of SJK Chung Hua No. 3 and Cherlin Ong Jing Ding of SMK Jalan Arang respectively.
Lions Clubs International past international area leader and past international director Datin Ellis Suriyati Omar, who officiated at the contest, commended the 12 Lions Clubs in Region 1 for what she described as “highlighting the significance of empowering world peace”.
The ceremony took place at the Atrium floor of the Boulevard Shopping Mall.
Organising chairperson president Alexander Koh revealed that Lions Clubs throughout the world have held the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest for over three decades to encourage young people worldwide to express their vision of peace.
Each year a peace-related theme is chosen and this year, the theme is ‘Journey of Peace’. Students aged 11, 12 and 13 as of November 15 were eligible to participate.
The contest was judged by Justin Wong, Gerald Goh and Ngo Soon Mang. Calligraphers who came to exhibit their talents were Lau Chi Hon and Lim Yong Tze.
Sponsors for the contest were Boulevard Shopping Mall and Wanna Balloons Decoration Services and the 12 Lions Clubs of Kuching and Serian.
